I'm not who my CD dreamed of

Catherine Zarac

In a box from 2004
A collection of CDs
Crude pink writing across silver faces

Mix of the summer :)
Sad mix :(
Mix for my crush <3
My American Idol audition

Hardly ten songs on any
And you cringe to hear them now
They’re silly, they’re melodramatic, they don't have “your” sound
But the thick pink marker spelled every title out
Shamelessly.
You don’t listen to that music anymore
You don’t know when you stopped.

Black Eyed Peas.
Amy Lee.
Alicia Keys.
Britney Spears.

You loved your playlist so much you made it a physical thing.
You never wanted to forget.
You imagined you’d still sing along.
And you haven’t forgotten the words.
Just how to sing
Shamelessly.
You don’t know when you stopped.

Eminem.
Enya.
Maroon 5.
Shania.

You don’t burn discs anymore.
You don’t know when you stopped.
Just that you’re not the person your CD dreamed of.

Catherine Zarac is a Canadian university student who likes to write poetry even though she finds it embarrassing. When she was a kid she listened to a lot of music that she now would call, similarly, "embarrassing". But she still enjoys Amy Lee, No Doubt, and, yes, Weezer.
